About the race

The Brass Monkey Half Marathon is one of the UK’s most sought-after winter road races, organised by the York Knavesmire Harriers since the early 1980s. Starting and finishing at York Racecourse, the flat, fast course winds through Bishopthorpe, Acaster Malbis, Appleton Roebuck, and back, offering ideal conditions for those chasing early-season personal bests or preparing for spring marathons. Despite January temperatures often hovering close to freezing (around 2°C / 36°F), the race consistently attracts a full field of 1,800 runners, chosen by ballot from thousands of applicants. Elite athletes, including Olympians, have graced the event, but the welcoming atmosphere ensures runners of all levels take part. Cheered on by supportive marshals and spectators, competitors experience a well-organised race that has earned a Gold rating from the British Association of Road Races.
