About the race

The Kochi Ryoma Marathon is a coastal endurance race that combines athletic rigor with cultural immersion. Named after Sakamoto Ryoma, the revered samurai and a pivotal figure in Japan’s modernization, the event follows a scenic route that cuts through Kochi’s coastline and along the clear Niyodo River. Runners are met with sharp ocean air, steady inclines, and a course steeped in history. Local volunteers serve Kochi staples like katsuo tataki and tsumire soup at aid and hospitality stations. At the finish in Haruno Athletic Stadium, top performers are awarded in both overall and age categories, and all finishers are entered into a lottery for regional specialties. The Omotenashi Booth Area offers a curated selection of local goods and running gear, making race weekend a showcase of Kochi’s identity.
