About the race

The Stowe Derby is one of the oldest ski races in North America, originating from a friendly challenge in 1945 between Sepp Ruschp, an Austrian skier, and Erling Strom, a Norwegian mountaineer. Competitors race from the top of Mt. Mansfield to Stowe village on a single pair of skis, testing their skiing abilities across varied terrain. Initially raced on alpine gear, modern competitors now prefer nordic skis. The event attracts a wide range of participants, from professional athletes to recreational skiers, and is celebrated for being both competitive and enjoyable.
